CHINA PAINTING WORKSHEET

THIRD FIRE

SLANTED BROW ORIENTAL BRU JNE 7

3rd FIRING:  CONE 018

The popup window can be closed after each detail is painted as each section has a link to the picture required for the area being discussed.  However, if you do not close the individual windows, you can return to them by clicking on the buttons on your task bar to bring each window to the front of your screen as you need it.  Each time you click on a button, a new window will open; so if you already have the feature open, use the task bar button rather than the popup window button.  This will avoid reopening the same window several times.  After a few times of using the technique sheets, you will find which method is more suitable to your needs and your computer.  You may want to leave the full face picture open and minimized as it takes slightly longer to reload than the other pictures.  All of the windows can be resized to suit the size of your workspace on your computer.

EYE LID SHADOW:  1 Pt. Dusky Lilac to 1 Pt. Lavender Mist.   Mix paint to a very dry consistency with Line Medium.  Paint color across the upper eyelid above the eye rim with the Medium Area Brush.  Blend the paint upwards toward the shadow brow using a Filbert Blender, having the color blending to nothing below the brow bone.  There should be just a slight hint of color, and no outside "edge" showing where the color stopped.  Observe the photo closely.

EYEBROWS:  Use same mixture as Underbrow.  Bru eyebrows are very distinctive from each other, with the strokes on the Right Eyebrow standing out of the brow in crisp, well defined strokes; and with the strokes on the Left Eyebrow lying on top of each other and even criss-crossing in some places.  Both brows start with the laying in of the lower strokes and building the rest of the strokes from there.

It is important to load your Super Brow Brush correctly in order to get the strength of color required yet still obtaining the "watercolor" look of the Bru brow.  Your brush should be fully loaded with a flowing coat of paint, yet not loaded so as to cause the paint to "bead" on the brush.    You start the stroke by using just the tip of the brush and then as you cross over the length of the stroke, you lay more of the brush onto the surface of the Bisq.  Then as you near the end of the stroke, you lift the bristles so that you end the stroke with again just the tip of the brush touching the surface.

Study the enlargements of the brows in the popup window to see the individual strokes and how they lay.  Then observe the following picture to see the actual placement on the head in relationship to the eyelashes and each other.

EYE RIM:  Satin Black mixed with Line Medium to a creamy consistency.  Load eyelash brush with a smooth load of paint, and using the brush at about 3/4 of the way down the bristle, lay the brush against the rim of the eye hole and run a thin line of color around the rim.  Do not carry the black into the area covered by the eye dot.

LIP SHADING, ACCENT LINES AND INNER NOSE DOTS: Pompadour Red.  The lips of a Bru are very delicately painted, but where the color is intense, it is very intense.  The most important thing about painting lips on a Bru is to keep them crisp and clean.  Do not overwork the blending of the shading.  If you can use your media to blend the paints instead of working them out with a brush, it is so much better.  If you study the lips of the antique you can see the same "watercolor" look to the painting of the lips as in the eyebrows.  The accent lines are painted with your Eyelash Brush dipped in water and then run through the paint.  Do one line at a time, reloading before doing the next.   Using just water gives more intensity to the color.  Apply the accents with a very light touch so that your lines are crisp and fine.  Note that the upper accents are below the top curve of the lip and the lower accents are along the lip line.  Both sets are separated in the middle by a substantial space.  The lips are darker to the inside, with the color fading out as it gets just past the middle of the lip.  The outer edges of both upper and lower lips remain the same pale color as the first firing.  You need to study the picture and see the three definite definitions of color.  Once the lips are shaded, then dip your accent/eyelash brush into the paint and paint a darker line of color along the inside of the mouth below the "tongue" and above.  Inside the circle of your first nose shading, paint a second, smaller circle of color with the darker paint.  Be very careful not to let the paint pool, as this will cause the nose dot to become very shiny.  Do not blend the color, as the inner nose dots should be painted with a nice crisp outer line.

CHEEKS:  Ruby Cheek Blush   Area Medium.  Apply Area Medium to the cheeks being sure to keep the application of media light.  Apply Ruby Cheek Blush using the Small China Mop.  Be sure to keep the color within the perimeter of the Area Medium and to the center of the previous blush application.  You are trying to create the rosy blush on the "apple" of the cheek or the fullest part of the cheek.  If you keep your color inside the radius of the previous blushing, you will create a finer blending of the color and eliminate the appearance of a "circle" of red on the cheeks.  Remember that with Ruby Cheek Blush, you achieve a deeper color than with the Regular Cheek Blush, so apply the blush sparingly and blend well.
