CHINA PAINTING WORKSHEET
SLANTED BROW ORIENTAL BRU JNE 7
2nd FIRING: CONE 019
The popup window can be closed after each detail is painted as each section has a link to the picture required for the area being discussed. However, if you do not close the individual windows, you can return to them by clicking on the buttons on your task bar to bring each window to the front of your screen as you need it. Each time you click on a button, a new window will open; so if you already have the feature open, use the task bar button rather than the popup window button. This will avoid reopening the same window several times. After a few times of using the technique sheets, you will find which method is more suitable to your needs and your computer. You may want to leave the full face picture open and minimized as it takes slightly longer to reload than the other pictures. All of the windows can be resized to suit the size of your workspace on your computer.
EYELASHES: Paint lashes using 2 pts Satin Black to 1 Pt Satin White mixed with line media. Use Eyelash Brush to paint regular lashes that flow on a slant towards the outer edge of the eye. Bru lashes are painted with a strong, bold stroke, but they are not BLACK in color. The spacing is even and the lashes are all of the same length. Start in the outer corner and work in towards the nose. The direction of the outer corner lash requires no guessing as to its position--it sticks straight out from the corner of the eye. The rest of the lashes are laid down in relationship to this initial stroke. Lashes can be painted drawing your brush towards you or away from you. This is a matter of personal preference. My preference is to draw towards me as I feel that that is the way the original Bru lashes were painted. Each lash ends with a deliberate position; the lashes are not "flyaway" at the end. This is easiest obtained by allowing your brush to end the stroke still in contact with the head. While a lot of technique sheets recommend doing the eyelashes in a subsequent firing, I prefer to do them now as having your lashes in place makes the placement of your eyebrow more accurate.
UNDERBROW: Mix 1 pt Eyebrow #4; 1 pt Satin Black with line media. Using Super Brow Brush, paint one-stroke underbrow and blend edges with shader brush. Observe the denseness of the underbrow under the strokes of the finished brow.
LIPS, NOSE DOTS, EYE DOTS: 2 Pts New Rose Red to 1 Pt. Pompadour REd mixed with Line Media to a creamy consistency. Load Medium Area Brush with a thin even load of paint. Work the paint into the brush using a mixture of half and half Line Media and Water to thin your paint to a clear translucent mixture. Working your brush into the paint and then back on your tile until the paint is flowing smoothly, and without excess paint on your brush, apply the paint to the lip area. The first coat of paint on the lips is very light and smooth. Your lip shape should be delicate and the color quite pale. Study the close up for the shape of the lips. Note the turned up corners. The color that you see on the outer edges of the lip is the color that you want to paint the entire lip area with this application.
The Nose Dots and Eye Dots are painted with the same light consistency of color. This is the first application of color, the second, shading application will intensify the color. Note the isolation of the tip of the lips and see exactly how light the color really is when removed from the rest of the lip.
Isolating parts of your subject is a good way to focus on the individual aspect that you are painting, but you must always refer back to the main subject so as to keep the relationship of the parts to the whole in the correct perspective as well.
CHEEKS: Regular Cheek Blush Area Medium. Apply Area Medium to the cheeks being sure to keep the application of media light. Apply Regular Cheek Blush using the Small China Mop. Be sure to keep the color within the perimeter of the Area Medium. Allowing the color to travel beyond this area will create what is known as a "STOP LINE". A stop line is caused by the paint going to the edge of the media…. when the media is fired off, the paint stops wherever the media ended, which does not create a soft, blended edge. Apply a very light touch of blush to the chin and the tops of the ears.
