The original Bru Jne 11 was produced by the Bru Jne & Cie of France
during the latter part of the 1800's. Our reproduction Bru Jne 11 is 24"
tall on a mechanical body. The head is poured in Lady White
porcelain slip, and the skin tones are painted to closely match those of the
original antique doll. She wears a synthetic mohair wig and has James Hand Glass
Craft Paperweight glass eyes (Made in England).
The dolls produced by this company were and are among the most sought-after
of the French dolls. The faces of the dolls are hauntingly beautiful and one
seldom forgets the expression. While the Bru dolls are not as rare as some of
the other antique French dolls, their beauty makes them highly desired and thus
the price of the antique is usually beyond the range of most doll collectors.
Having this type of doll in any collection is like having the "cream of the
crop".
The purchase of a well represented reproduction enhances not only a collection
of reproduction dolls, but also the collection of an antique enthusiast. An
antique Bru of this size would cost approximately $18 to 20,000 (US dollars).
Our Bru is done in an "imaginary"
fashion, which means that she is painted authentically, but by adapting her
head to the modern mechanical movement, she is no longer correctly referred
to as a reproduction of an antique doll as none of the original Bru dolls
were treated in this fashion.
Our Bru's costume is of quality fabrics and consists of a silk
nightgown and matching hat, and cotton slip and pantalets. Her shoes are of French design.
The base of her stand is covered with velvet to
compliment the costume, and is trimmed with gold colored accents. Her
golden colored candle is decorated at the base with poinsettia's which have
a light gold spray paint application. The mechanical movement involves
her head moving in a circular back and forth and up and down movement.
The arms open wide, and close together as if she is protecting the flame of
her candle as she sneaks downstairs to see what "Papa Christmas" has left
for her under the tree. Her hair is slightly tousled from sleep,
and her eyes flash with excitement! What a treat to behold.... not
only as a Christmas decoration, but all year round.
She comes complete with a Certificate of Authenticity, Brief
written history of the Bru Jne & Cie, and the Resume of Evelyn Stanbury,
GMDM, International Award Winning Artist and Certified Doll Artisan Guild
Instructor.
